PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program is designed for adults who are successful in their occupations but lack a college degree. It provides training for those who wish to train/teach in a vocational/technical/business program in public institutions or private business settings. The Bachelor's degree includes the Designated Subjects Teaching Credential in Career Technical Studies or Adult Education and the Supervision and Coordination Credential. The program is offered on weekends and uses instructional techniques suited to adult learners.

This program is offered through the College of Continuing Education while its academic home is in the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, School Psychology, and Deaf Studies in the College of Education. It is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), the California State University Chancellor's Office, and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Eligibility

The BCTS degree program requires that students have five to seven years of vocational/ technical/business experience in a designated field and the equivalent of one year teaching/training experience in their designated field prior to graduation. Under the Swan Act and upon evaluation by the California State Board of Examiners for Career Technical Teachers, degree candidates receive up to 40 elective units for prior job experience, teaching/training experience, supervisory experience, and current professional development and education. In addition, candidates complete general education and graduation requirements for Sacramento State and the Career Technical Studies Major.

Minimum total units required for BCTS: 120

Courses in parentheses are prerequisites.

Students will receive letter grades, "A" to "F," for all courses except special problems and field experience for which Credit/No Credit grades will be assigned. Students completing the teaching or supervision credentials will apply to the Sacramento County Office of Education.

In addition to the courses listed, students must receive credit through the Swan evaluation process for past vocational/teaching experience and must be approved by the statewide commission for the degree. Students may receive up to 40 elective units from this evaluation.

GRADUATE PROGRAM

The advanced option in Workforce Development Advocacy is designed to compliment the existing Bachelor of Career Technical Studies [BCTS] (the weekend program is designed for adults who are successful in their occupational roles but lack a college degree). The new option would be offered as a component of the Master of Arts degree program in the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation and School Psychology, but delivered through the College of Continuing Education using a similar scheduling format as the BCTS program (an intensive weekend schedule to which employers as well as BCTS graduates have adapted).
