PORTUGUESE
College of Arts and Letters

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Portuguese program emphasizes language, literature
and culture and prepares students who are interested in pursuing teaching
opportunities in secondary schools and bilingual programs, advanced studies
in the language, or work in areas related to the Portuguese-American community
in California.
Portuguese is a major foreign language. After Spanish, it is the second
most spoken Romance language, with 190 million people in ten nations spread
across three continents. Portuguese is the official language in Brazil,
Mozambique, Angola and Portugal. Brazil is half of the South American
continent with a population of over 150 million and vast natural resources.
Portuguese-speaking Africa is also important for its natural resources,
especially Angola with its oil deposits. Approximately one million Californians
are of Portuguese ancestry.
REQUIREMENTS - MINOR
A minor in Portuguese requires 18 units, 9 of which
must be in upper division courses. Consult an advisor in Portuguese.
