CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SACRAMENTO

California State University, Sacramento

California State University, Sacramento offers a life-changing opportunity for our students, preparing them to be leaders in their fields and communities. Our professors are known for their dedication to great teaching. And our students benefit from studying and living in California’s capital city.

Sacramento State is a vibrant metropolitan university that is among the largest campuses in the California State University system. We enroll a multicultural student body of more than 28,000, and graduate about 6,000 students each year. Despite our size, quality teaching in small classes remains a top priority. Students enjoy personalized attention from their professors, as well as extensive research and internship opportunities in Sacramento, the heart of California government.

Sacramento State remains one of the nation’s best higher education values, with student fees among the lowest in the nation. About half of our students receive some form of financial assistance.

Our students choose from numerous fields of study. We offer a strong and diverse academic curriculum that includes 60 undergraduate programs and 40 graduate programs, as well as two joint doctorates. Our larger programs include teacher education, business, computer technology, criminal justice, psychology, and communication studies. In addition, numerous offerings such as the Honors Program help students meet others with similar interests and develop strong ties with professors. Among our programs linked to state government is the highly competitive Capital Fellows Program, in which graduate students work as full-time staff in the legislative, executive, or judicial branch.

Preparing for a career is a vital part of a Sacramento State education. We have one of the largest cooperative education programs in California, placing students in paid positions where they receive academic credit. Hundreds of other students participate in business- and government-related internships. One in three Sacramento State students work as volunteers – many through a service learning project in class–gaining valuable work experience while helping their community. Our Career Center helps students both with finding a career interest and with job searches, providing job databases and sponsoring an on-campus recruiting program.

Outside the classroom, Sacramento State students lead active lives. There are campus-sponsored arts programs, speeches, debates, comedy shows, and concerts throughout the year, and plenty of cultural and entertainment opportunities in the surrounding area. More than half the University’s students join at least one of 250 student organizations, and thousands participate in the intramural sports program. About 400 intercollegiate athletes compete at the Division I level.

We’re particularly proud of our beautiful 300-acre campus, with its lush landscaping and 3,000 trees. Miles of trails stretch along the nearby American River Parkway, linking our campus and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento.

The city of Sacramento is one of the state’s most affordable big cities, and the area has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The region’s mild climate, rivers, and nearby recreation areas make it popular with outdoor enthusiasts. It hosts the world’s largest traditional jazz festival each Memorial Day weekend, and popular attractions include the State Capitol building, the State Railroad Museum, and the Crocker Art Museum. Within easy driving distance are San Francisco, the Napa and Sonoma valleys, the historic gold country, and the Lake Tahoe region’s ski slopes.

Sacramento State is looking to the future with a major campus initiative–Destination 2010–designed to make this a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus for the West. Current students, as well as future students, will benefit from the changes and improvements to our academic program, student services, and facilities. Included in the planning are a large student recreation center, an arena, and stadium upgrades within our Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex, which was the site of the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Construction for a large new residence hall started in Fall 2007.
