Acrobat Reader Installation Guide

When you click "click here" at the bottom of this page,
Netscape will bring you to Adobe company's site which has a free
copy of the Acrobat Reader available for you to download. Once
you finish downloading the file, Netscape will not bring you
back to this page which contains installation and configuration
procedures. Therefore, we recommend that you print this
page and follow the directions for downloading and installing
Acrobat Reader.
Downloading Acrobat Reader
Please read this section carefully before you download and install
the Acrobat Reader. Once you click on "click here" colored
text at the bottom of this page, Netscape will bring you to Adobe
Corporation's web site.
- Adobe's page contains information about downloading Acrobat
Reader for Macintosh, Windows, and DOS.
- Scroll down to the appropriate section to download the version
you need.
- Once you click on the colored text to download the file, Netscape
will ask you if you wish to "Save to Disk", "Cancel
Transfer", or "Configure a Viewer". Select "Save
to Disk" to save the compressed executable file to the hard
disk or a floppy disk.
- You will then be prompted to specify the drive and directory
you want the file to be saved to. Select the Data directory on
C drive and click "OK".
- Depending on the type of machine you have, the time it takes
to download the file varies. The information bar at the bottom
will tell you how far you are in the download process.
- When the process is finished, exit Netscape. You are now ready
to install Acrobat Reader.
Installing Acrobat Reader
Before you install Acrobat Reader, please close all active
applications. At the end of the installation process, Acrobat
Reader will restart Windows. If you have active applications,
you may lose your work.
- Go to Windows, if you are not already there.
- Under Program Manager, select File, Run from the main menu.
- Select Browse and go to the directory where you saved the
Acrobat Reader file you just downloaded.
- Click on it to highlight the file and click on "OK"
to exit the Browse window.
- Click on "OK" to exit the Run window.
- Follow the instructions on your screen.
- Installation requires approximately 2 MB of free hard disk
space.
Configuring Netscape to Read PDF Files
After you have installed the reader onto your computer, you are
ready to view PDF files. However, you need to configure Netscape
so that it will open the reader automatically when a PDF file
is selected.
- In Netscape, go to Options, Preferences. Click on the down
arrow at the end of "Set Preferences On" box to bring
up a list of selections. Select "Helper Applications".
- Click on the New Type button to bring up the Configure New
Mime Type dialog box. In the "Mime Type" box, type in
application. In the "Mime Subtype" box, type
in pdf. When you are done, click OK.
- In the Extension box, type in pdf.
- In the Action box, select Launch Application. In the box,
type in c:\acroread\acroread.exe or provide the correct
path where the Acrobat Reader locates on your computer. When you
are ready, click "OK".
